Determiners Grammar - Class 10 CBSE Board

Information as per CBSE Syllabus

What are Determiners?

Determiners are words placed in front of a noun to make it clear what the noun refers to. They specify or limit the noun. Unlike adjectives, which describe nouns, determiners are used to introduce or identify nouns. They answer questions like 'which one?', 'how many?', 'whose?'.

Types of Determiners:

  • Articles: 'a', 'an', 'the'. (e.g., a book, an apple, the sun)
  • Demonstratives: 'this', 'that', 'these', 'those'. (e.g., this car, those birds)
  • Possessives: 'my', 'your', 'his', 'her', 'its', 'our', 'their', 'whose'. (e.g., my house, their plan)
  • Quantifiers: 'some', 'any', 'much', 'many', 'few', 'little', 'a lot of', 'plenty of', 'most', 'all', 'both', 'each', 'every', 'either', 'neither', 'several', 'enough', etc. (e.g., some milk, many friends)
  • Numbers (Cardinal and Ordinal): 'one', 'two', 'first', 'second', etc. (e.g., three days, first prize)
  • Distributives: 'each', 'every', 'either', 'neither'. (e.g., each student, every person)
  • Interrogatives: 'which', 'what', 'whose'. (e.g., which book, whose pen)

Key Points for CBSE Class 10:

  • Understanding the correct usage of articles (A/An/The) in various contexts.
  • Differentiating between quantifiers like 'much/many', 'few/a few', 'little/a little'.
  • Correct application of demonstratives and possessives.
  • Using determiners appropriately in sentences for clarity and grammatical correctness.
  • Common errors to avoid (e.g., using 'much' with countable nouns).
